You know that drawer filled with receipts, old notes, and bits of pretty paper you couldn’t bring yourself to throw out? That’s not clutter. That’s material.

Junk journaling turns all those forgotten scraps into something meaningful. It’s creative, calming, and way more satisfying than doom-scrolling.

And at Create Healing Art Studio, we make space every Tuesday at 5:30 PM for you to do just that. Join us here whether you’re brand new or already deep into the world of washi tape.

What Is Junk Journaling, Really?

Junk journaling is the art of using everyday stuff to tell your story.

We’re talking things like used stamps, old book pages, fabric scraps, pressed flowers, ticket stubs, and handwritten notes. It doesn’t have to be pretty. It just has to feel like you.

One of our recent class creations included a mix of floral paper, a vintage-looking postage stamp, and a soft textured background that felt like stepping into a memory. That’s the kind of storytelling you can’t buy at the store.

Try this: Grab a page from an old notebook and glue on something that reminds you of today. A candy wrapper, a quote, or a doodle. Keep it simple. The more imperfect, the better.

A Quiet Way to Get Out of Your Head

We all need something that helps us slow down. Junk journaling is one of those rare activities where your hands get busy and your mind finally gets a break.

In one class, a student added pressed flowers over an old math textbook page. It was such a peaceful mix of logic and creativity. That’s the power of this practice.

When you glue something down, you’re also letting go of stress. When you write or collage what you’re feeling, it clears a little space in your heart.

Tip: Don’t worry about how it looks. Just start with what you feel. That’s when the magic happens.

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou

Unexpected Combinations Are Where the Fun Lives

One of our journals had a fake potion label that said “Unicorn Dust,” a vintage photo of a man in a suit, and a torn piece of fabric tucked in the background. Somehow, it worked perfectly.

That’s what junk journaling is all about. It invites the unexpected. You never know which pieces will click together until they do.

There’s no pressure to plan. Just play with what you’ve got and let it unfold naturally.

Prompt idea: Create a page using only items you find in your junk drawer. You’ll surprise yourself with what feels meaningful once it’s glued down.
