☔ When it Rains: A Rain Walk Reflection Activity for Kids
Rainy days don’t have to mean staying stuck inside! This week, we embraced the drizzle and turned it into a learning adventure with a rain walk followed by a creative reflection activity.

🌧 What’s a Rain Walk?
A rain walk is a simple, sensory-rich outing where you take a short walk during light rain and observe the world around you. It encourages kids to slow down, notice their surroundings, and express how they feel in nature—even when the weather isn’t picture perfect.
Before heading out, we dressed appropriately with:
Rain boots
Waterproof jackets
Umbrellas
And of course, big smiles!
⚠️ A Quick Note About Rain Safety
Before you grab your gear, here are a few important safety tips to keep in mind:
Only go out in light rain — never during storms, heavy rain, or when there’s thunder and lightning.
Avoid flood-prone areas, fast-moving water, and muddy trails.
Keep your walk short and close to home, especially with little ones.
Make sure kids know to stay near adults and avoid running on slippery sidewalks.
🖍 After the Walk: Reflection Time
Once we got back and dried off, we sat down with some crayons and filled out a simple worksheet I made called “When it Rains…”
Each umbrella panel invites kids to finish the sentence:
-
I see… 🌈🌧
-
I can… 🏃♀️💦
-
I feel… 🥶☁️
Here’s a look at the blank version (feel free to print and use it at home):

And here’s one we completed:
Our completed worksheet:

Some of our favorite responses were:
-
I see: drops, rainbows, dark clouds
-
I can: jump, splash, catch raindrops
-
I feel: cold, wet, muddy, wind-blown
Not only did this help us build vocabulary and practice mindfulness, but it also gave us a chance to process our experience creatively.
🌈 Why It Matters
Activities like these spark curiosity and emotional awareness. Kids learn to connect with nature, recognize their feelings, and express themselves in thoughtful ways , even on gray days. Plus, it’s just fun to jump in puddles sometimes!
Want to try this at home?
